Sainte Foy la Grande is very well placed on the banks of the Dordogne River, just an hour from Bordeaux and 20 minutes from Bergerac. It is one of the original bastide towns built in the 1200’s and parts of it still survive, with half-timbered houses, arcades and vestiges of the surrounding walls; certainly the original grid system of roads, where we are located, remains.

Sainte Foy is ideally situated for the extended Pilgrims route to Santiago de Compostela and for general sight seeing, be it in the bustling and modern city of Bordeaux or the ancient grandeur of Bergerac. We are in the Bordeaux wine growing region, a fact that you can not miss as the countryside is covered in vineyards. Within easy reach are St Emilion, a UNESCO world heritage site, the town of Duras and many well-known chateaux or you can head out to the coast if you prefer. Parking in Sainte Foy is not difficult, either on the street or there is a car park just five minutes walk away; all parking in town is free.

There is a large, renowned farmers market, voted among the best in France where, it seems, people from all over the area come on a Saturday morning. In the summer season you can hire canoes on the river or enjoy the beach on the opposite bank. There are nearby golf courses or you can hire an electrical-assisted bicycle locally; there are also plenty of lovely walks in the area.

Sainte Foy has, for the most part, a wonderful weather system.
